Nghiên cứu này xem xét mối quan hệ giữa hiệu suất ESG (Environment, Social, Governance - Môi trường, Xã hội, Quản trị) và hành vi tránh thuế của doanh nghiệp tại Châu Âu giai đoạn 2015 - 2023, và tìm thấy hiệu suất ESG cao là nguyên nhân gia tăng mức độ tránh thuế của các doanh nghiệp với mục tiêu tối ưu hóa lợi nhuận. Kết quả phân tích cho thấy tác động này mạnh mẽ hơn ở các doanh nghiệp quy mô lớn và những doanh nghiệp có lợi nhuận trên tổng tài sản (ROA) thấp, đây là một minh chứng có các động cơ chiến lược và áp lực tài chính khác nhau đối với các doanh nghiệp tại Châu Âu. Những phát hiện này cảnh báo các nhà hoạch định chính sách và nhà đầu tư về hệ quả ngoài ý muốn của các quy định ESG, đồng thời nhấn mạnh sự cần thiết của việc tích hợp giám sát thuế vào khuôn khổ phát triển bền vững khi triển khai thực hiện ESG.
